The number was wrong but believable
My social dashboard had a Threads views tile. It showed about 5k. My Threads profile showed about 50k total views. The dashboard was reporting a tenth of the real number.
The tricky part is that 5k looked fine. It was a believable number, so I had no reason to question it until I put it next to the profile.
What exactly is the 'total' on your dashboard a total of, and when did you last check it against the number the platform shows?
Cause: it only added up the latest 25 posts
The old code fetched the 25 most recent posts, requested view insights for each one, and added them up. The tile said 'views', but it really meant 'views across the latest 25 posts'. Views on any older post were outside the count from the start.
Second symptom: it changed on every refresh
Because it made 25 per-post insight calls, a few of them failed on every refresh. Posts with failed calls dropped out of the sum, so the number flickered from one refresh to the next. Even apart from the narrow scope, it gave a different answer to the same question every time.
Looking back, both symptoms came from the same design. I was answering an account-level question, 'how many times has this account been viewed', by piecing together post-level data.
What would you do? Paginate past 25 to cover every post and add retries for failed calls, or find a data source that matches the level of the question?
Fix: switch to account insights
I dropped the per-post sum and switched to account-level insights. They return cumulative views, likes, replies, and reposts for the account in one go. The change touched one dashboard file: 6 lines added and 6 removed.
After the change, views came out at 51,512, which matches the profile. Since the number no longer depends on one call per post, it stopped jumping on refresh.
Self-check
- Have you compared your dashboard's totals against the same metric on the platform's own screen?
- Is a total being computed over a hidden limit like 'latest N' or 'first page'?
- If some individual calls fail, does the dashboard quietly show a smaller number instead of an error?
The honest part
I can't say how long the number had been a tenth of the real value, or what decisions I made based on it in the meantime, because nothing was recorded. I also didn't figure out why some per-post insight calls were failing. I just went around them with account insights. I confirmed that the account total matches the profile, but I don't know how the platform computes it internally. And when I need to compare individual posts, I'll be back to per-post calls and the same failures.
